The word bonsai actually consists of two Japanese words: "bon" is a tray or pot and "sai" a plant or a planting. Essentially, therefore, a bonsai is a pot plant! For most of us, however, bonsai describes a tree or shrub planted in a shallow container and cultivated to appear like a full sized tree. A bonsai plant is an art form -- but one which is a living and growing and which changes as it grows and as the seasons change.
